Hoisin sauce is super easy to make it at home and so much better than store brought sauce. This recipes uses basic pantry ingredients, and no cooking is required. The consistency of the sauce is thick like a paste, dark brown in color, and has a sweet – salty taste. Hoisin sauce is commonly used in Chinese, Vietnamese and in American cuisine. Recipe includes detailed instructions with stepwise picture and recipe links which uses this sauce.

I have used store brought hoisin sauce, but I personally feel this homemade version is much better and healthier than that. Store brought sauce is very sweet with high content from the molasses, starch from potato, artificial colors added for the deep brown color and all the preservatives added to it. So I decided to make it homemade with the ingredients available in the pantry. Tried it few times with different variations before I ended up with this recipe, you’ll not make out any difference between homemade and store brought hoisin sauce.

The word hoisin is derived from a shortening of the Chinese words for seafood sauce although the sauce does not contain any seafood ingredients and is not commonly consumed with seafood. The reason for the name is seafood flavor. Traditionally, hoisin sauce is made using toasted mashed soybeans, but in this recipe we are not going to use it.

Where can this hoisin sauce be used?

  • In Chinese cuisine –  hoisin sauce is used in as a marinade sauce for meat or as a dipping sauce. It can be used as a dipping sauce for steamed or pan fried rice noodle roll and dumplings.

Storing instructions

Sauce can be refrigerated in a clean air tight glass container ( preferred). When using it, make sure to use a clean dry spoon every time and refrigerate any leftover sauce immediately. I have tested it with max of three weeks in the refrigerator, but I am sure it can keep good for more time. Tamarind, vinegar, oil, acts as a natural preservative for the sauce.
